The EPA has stated that medium to heavy duty trucks account for 23% of GHG emissions in the United States and are the second largest source of GHG emissions from the transportation sector. This category of vehicle includes buses, long-haul trucks, garbage trucks and many larger 200-500hp diesel engine powered vehicles. Not only do they emit Green House Gases but they are also serious emitters of noise pollution and cost a significant amount to operate.

CONCLUSIONS


  • For applications requiring multiple stop-starts and high torque output CNG is not a good choice of fuel. Our numbers indicate that CNG used in side-loader applications have the lowest mpg and therefore require more fuel and emit more green house gases.
  • Long distance haulage applications increase the suitability of CNG. For the Front-loader applications Diesel becomes a less efficient fuel type.
  • At .13$/kWh an electric powertrain reduces fuel related costs by 43% / 31% for Side-loader and front loader applications respectively.
